What a Magento migration plan covers
We start with an inventory of what your Magento store actually does: product types and attribute sets, store views, extensions, custom modules and integrations. Each part gets a decision: move it, rebuild it on Shopify, replace it with an app or retire it. Then follow the URL map and redirects, the migration of products, customers and orders, analytics and feeds, and QA on real processes. The goal is not a copy of Magento, but a store your team can run without a developer for every change.

What moves from Magento, and how
Magento and Adobe Commerce store data differently from Shopify. A one-to-one copy does not work, so we map every structure to its Shopify counterpart before anything is imported:
Configurable products become products with variants. Shopify allows three options per product, so a fourth Magento attribute becomes a metafield, a separate product or a combined listing.
Attribute sets and custom attributes become metafields and metaobjects, with the storefront filters rebuilt on top of them.
Bundled and grouped products become bundles or linked products, depending on how stock and pricing must behave.
Store views become Shopify Markets for languages and currencies, or separate stores when catalogues, prices or legal entities differ.
Customer accounts move without passwords, because Magento password hashes cannot be imported. We plan activation emails or passwordless login, and test them before launch.
Order history moves as far as you need it for service, returns and reporting. Older orders can stay in an archive.
For every step in detail, read our guide Magento to Shopify migration.
Extensions, B2B and integrations
Most Magento stores run on dozens of extensions and a few custom modules. Each one gets a decision: covered by Shopify itself, replaced by an app, rebuilt with Shopify Functions or a custom app, or retired. Fewer moving parts is usually the biggest gain of the move.
Adobe Commerce B2B features have Shopify counterparts: company accounts, catalogues, price lists, payment terms and quick order. Quotes and approval flows need a closer look per process. More on Shopify B2B.
Integrations usually set the critical path: ERP, PIM, WMS, POS and marketing tools. For each one we define the data owner, sync frequency and error handling, and test it before launch. See ERP integration.
Magento URLs and SEO
Every Magento URL changes on Shopify. Products move to /products/, categories to /collections/, and the .html suffix disappears. That makes the redirect map the most important SEO deliverable of the project:
We crawl every indexable URL, including layered navigation and store-view URLs, not just the menu.
Each old URL goes to its closest new page, never to the homepage by default.
Category, product and CMS pages keep their content, metadata and internal links, or are improved on purpose.
hreflang is rebuilt when store views become Shopify Markets.
After launch we compare per template, folder and country, so a drop is found where it starts.
No agency can promise unchanged rankings. A controlled redirect plan prevents the losses that are avoidable.
Timeline and approach
A clearly scoped Magento migration takes about three months. Adobe Commerce with B2B, several store views or many integrations takes six months or more. We work in fixed phases:
Migration audit: data, extensions, integrations, URLs and processes, with scope and risks per decision.
Solution design: Shopify architecture, data model, markets and the role of apps versus custom work.
Build and integrations, delivered in reviewable parts.
Trial migrations with real data, to measure completeness and duration.
QA on real processes: orders, payments, stock, returns, B2B and tracking.
Cutover with data freeze, final sync and redirects, followed by monitoring after launch.
Plan backwards from your deadline. Standard support ends on 31 May 2027 for 2.4.7 and on 31 May 2028 for 2.4.8; Adobe Commerce customers get one extra year on some versions. With six months of project time, the decision has to be made at least nine months before that date.
Plan backwards from your peak. To sell on Shopify on Black Friday 2027 (26 November), we count six weeks for the scan, four for scope, about twenty for build, migration and testing, and six for launch and hypercare, followed by a code freeze from early November. In practice: the decision has to be made in February 2027.
We migrate in three runs, never one: a dry run in a development store to find fields that arrive empty, a dress rehearsal with the full data set to time the import, and a delta run after the freeze. After launch our hypercare runs 90 days, starting with daily checks of orders per hour, checkout conversion, failed payments per method, 404s and support tickets.
