If you’ve ever wondered why some Shopify stores seem to effortlessly convert visitors into paying customers, the secret often lies in their checkout process. One of the most powerful tools available today for optimizing this process is Klarna. As a Shopify Plus Partner, we at Flatline Agency have seen firsthand how integrating Klarna can transform businesses by making payments smoother, more flexible, and customer-friendly.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about Shopify Klarna integration, from why it’s a game changer for your store to step by step instructions on how to set it up. By the end of this article, you’ll have a clear roadmap to boost your Shopify sales and create a seamless shopping experience for your customers.

Why choose Klarna for your Shopify store?

Klarna’s integration with Shopify is designed to provide flexibility, security, and scalability for both merchants and customers. Here’s why it’s a game changer for your eCommerce business:

1. Flexible payment options

Klarna offers multiple payment options at checkout, giving customers the freedom to choose how and when they pay:

  • Pay in full: Customers can pay for their purchases immediately using their preferred funding source.
  • Pay in 3 or 4: Shoppers can split their purchase into smaller, interest-free payments.
  • Pay later: No upfront payments required, customers can pay within 30 days.
  • Financing: For larger purchases, customers can spread the cost over monthly installments.

These flexible options encourage shoppers to make larger and more frequent purchases, boosting your average order value (AOV) and conversion rates.

2. Increased conversions

According to Klarna’s official data:

  • Merchants see an average uplift of 20% in order value after integrating Klarna.
  • With 600,000+ integrated retailers globally, Klarna has proven its ability to increase sales and customer loyalty.

By offering Klarna, you remove financial barriers for customers, making it easier for them to complete their purchases.

3. Global reach

Klarna supports multiple regions and currencies, helping Shopify merchants expand their market reach. With 85 million active users worldwide (including 20 million in the US alone), Klarna provides access to a vast pool of potential customers.

4. Quick and easy integration

Setting up Klarna with Shopify is straightforward and can be completed in as little as 20 minutes . The integration includes:

  • Adding Klarna’s app to your Shopify store.
  • Enabling on-site messaging to promote Klarna’s benefits throughout the shopper journey.

5. Comprehensive support

Klarna provides enterprise-level support for merchants, including:

  • A dedicated account manager.
  • Technical support and analytics.
  • Partner marketing assistance to help you maximize Klarna’s benefits.

Step by step guide to integrating Klarna with Shopify

Integrating Klarna with your Shopify store is a straightforward process, but it requires careful attention to detail to ensure everything works seamlessly. Follow these steps, as outlined in Klarna’s official documentation.

Step 1: Log in to the Klarna merchant portal

  1. Before you begin, log in to your Klarna Merchant Portal. If you don’t yet have a Klarna merchant account, you can sign up here.
  2. Ensure that you’re logged in as the full account owner of your Shopify store and the Klarna Merchant Portal.
  3. Select the correct Shopify store to associate it with your Klarna merchant ID. Once associated, this merchant ID will be blocked from use for another store. Each Shopify store must have its own unique Klarna merchant ID.

Step 2: Start the installation process

  1. In the Klarna Merchant Portal, click the Integration Guides link and select the Shopify option.
    • If the Integration Guides option isn’t displayed for your account, contact Klarna Merchant Support to enable it (only available if you’re contracted directly with Klarna).
  2. This step initiates the installation process by associating your Shopify store with Klarna.

Step 3: Install the Klarna app

  1. Log in to your Shopify Admin Dashboard as the full account owner .
  2. Click the Install Klarna Shopify Application button provided in the Klarna Merchant Portal.
    • Note: The Klarna app is a public app but isn’t listed in the Shopify App Store. It won’t appear in your store’s Apps menu like other apps, which is expected for Shopify’s new payments apps.

Step 4: Generate and connect API credentials

  1. In the Klarna Merchant Portal, generate new API credentials for your Shopify store.
  2. Download these credentials to your local computer for security purposes. Although you won’t manually enter these credentials anywhere (as they’re automatically connected), you must complete this step to proceed.
  3. Save the newly generated API credentials securely.

Step 5: Verify the integration

  1. In the Klarna Merchant Portal, click Verify Integration to ensure that your Klarna and Shopify accounts are connected correctly.
  2. This step confirms that the integration is set up properly before proceeding further.

Step 6: Activate the Klarna payment method

  1. In your Shopify Admin Dashboard, navigate to Settings > Payments .
  2. Activate the new payment method named Klarna . This option is only available if you’re the full account owner of the store.
    • Note: Activating other payment methods supporting Klarna (e.g., Paymentwall or pay.nl) without appropriate credentials will result in errors during checkout.

Step 7: Test the checkout flow

  1. Add a product to your cart and go through the Shopify checkout process.
  2. On the payment page, select Klarna as the payment method and click Pay Now or Complete Order .
  3. Ensure that the Klarna payment flow starts successfully. Placing a test order isn’t necessary, but make sure Klarna appears as an option during checkout.
    • Note: If the payment method isn’t in Test Mode , fees may apply.

Step 8: Configure customer contact settings

  1. In your Shopify Admin Dashboard, go to Settings > Checkout and Accounts > Customer Contact Method .
  2. Set the Customer Contact Method to Email Only . This ensures that the customer’s email address is shared with Klarna upon redirection to the Klarna payment page.
    • Failure to do so may result in customers receiving error messages from Klarna.

Step 9: Require phone number and full name

  1. In the Customer Information section of your Shopify checkout settings:
    • Configure the phone number field to be a required field.
    • Ensure that both the first name and last name fields are required.
  2. These settings are crucial because Klarna requires both the customer’s full name and phone number to process payments.

Step 10: Go live

  1. Once all steps are completed, switch your Klarna Merchant Account to Live Mode in the Klarna Merchant Portal.
  2. Your Shopify store is now ready to accept real payments through Klarna!

Turning one-time buyers into a second purchase: the flow architecture behind repeatable revenue

The second purchase flow architecture that earns a repeat order is not a fixed list of emails. Acquisition or retention: deciding where the next euro actually returns

It is budget season, and two line items are competing for the same money. One funds another month of Meta and Google. The other funds the flows, the loyalty logic, and the post-purchase work that turns a first order into a second. Most teams settle it with a percentage split copied from somewhere: 70/30, 60/40,...

Acquisition keeps getting more expensive: shifting weight to the channels you already own

The paid budget went up again this quarter, and the new-customer count stayed flat. Same campaigns, same creative discipline, more spend to stand still. Most teams read that line as a bidding problem and go hunting for a cheaper channel or a sharper audience. Rising customer acquisition cost is rarely a bidding problem. It is...

New customers keep coming, none come back: the retention math that decides whether growth is profitable
